The symbol of the cross is very ancient. It was associated with the sun in many cultures that predate Christianity by thousands of years. Also, it was known as a symbol of male fertility in some pre-Judaic religions. As a youth. I've always been intrigued by the power and mystery of the cross. Growing up Catholic, my knowledge of the cross came from the bible and the story of Christ. Later in life, as I learned more of its factual history, I began to use the symbol in my art. I found that anything placed on a cross immediately illuminates it. This became the template for my ideas whether they were intentional or subconscious.
